ShortBarrel Double Oak
ShortBarrel whiskey | 117 Proof | 6.2 years old
Nose: Grapes for days! Followed by vanilla, oak, and light alcohol
Palate: My first sip of the day is immediately met with heavy cinnamon, caramelized brown sugar, and light vanilla notes. Second sip settles in a bit more and the oak presence starts to surface. The second sip starts to bring back those fruity notes from the nose. Towards the end of the pour, all those flavors start to intermingle nicely.
Finish: The finish is remarkable…arguably my favorite aspect of this bourbon. The finish starts subtly but ramps up nicely and opens up to brown sugar, toasted oak, and light cinnamon. That great taste of toasted oak lingers for quite a while.
Conclusion: This bottle definitely checks all the boxes for what a double oaked bourbon should be. The woody, oaky taste is certainly there but at no point does it cross the line into over-oaked. The counterbalancing sweet brown sugar and dark fruit brings you back to center. And considering this bottle comes in at 117 proof, it drinks well below that number. Well done ShortBarrel and thank you to your staff for a very welcoming experience in store!
